You may start to worry if it seems like a lot of time has passed since you filed. If you are unsure about what is happening to your return, then you can use the IRS tracking tool. Known as Where’s My Refund, the tool lets you check your refund status.
You can find out where your refund is in the process and when to expect your payment. The Where’s My Refund tool can track your refund whether you filed online or by mail.
It also works if you filed your taxes or a tax preparation company did on your behalf.
To use the tool, you will need to go on the IRS website and follow the prompts.
You can also download the IRS2Go app to track your refund from your smartphone.
- You will need your Social Security Number, your tax filing status, and the exact refund amount. You will see one of the three following status updates:
- Return received, which means the IRS has the tax filing but has yet to process it
- Refund approved, which means the IRS approves your refund amount filed
- Refund sent, which means the IRS sent your payment
You can also call the IRS. However, this method involves long wait times to speak to a representative.
You should reserve this option if it has been three weeks since filing electronically or six weeks since filing by mail. Should your refund status say “Refund Sent” but you have not received the payment for several weeks, then you should call the IRS.
