If plumbing is on the list of your potential career options, it is worth the time to give the option some extra consideration. Plumbing may not seem like the most glamorous profession, but the truth remains that plumbers do some very important work, much of which is well-paid.
If you didn’t know, plumbers help design and execute highly complex piping systems, attend to emergencies and install a range of appliances. In fact, plumbers are today among the highest-paid trade jobs out there, with a median salary of around $54,000 annually. And during your plumbing apprenticeship program, you will be learning, working, and earning a living in a very specialized and promising trade.
A plumbing apprenticeship usually takes around 2-5 years to complete. Like an electrical apprenticeship, you will most likely have to pass an aptitude test to qualify for your apprenticeship. Many plumbers unions offer apprenticeships, but you may also obtain one through a private company that offers apprenticeships.
While you do not have to attend a trade school in order to become a plumbers apprentice, you can get an edge over the competition by completing some coursework and having that knowledge. You may even be able to get the apprenticeship through the school.
Before you start your apprenticeship, you should have some basic plumbers supplies, including but not limited to, the following:
- Pipe cutters
- Pliers
- Torpedo level
- Multi-bit screwdriver
- Adjustable wrench
After completing the apprenticeship, you can start your career as a journeyman and then ultimately become a master plumber.
