The most common types of senior discounts are the ones offered in grocery stores. Many grocery stores have designated senior shopping days when senior citizens receive special pricing if purchasing items on that day. Check in with your local grocer to see if they offer special senior discounts or special discount days.
Other supermarkets designate earlier hours, such as 7:00am-8:00 am for seniors only shopping to limit competition for necessary items during the pandemic. During normal hours of operation senior shopping days at participating grocery stores include:
- Fred Meyer: 10% off on the first Tuesday of each month (55+).
- American Discount Stores: 10% off every Monday.
- Compare Foods Supermarket: 10% off every Monday (62+)
- Bi-Lo: 5% off every Wednesday (60+).
Retail stores also offer senior discounts in similar fashion.
Some stores, such as Rite Aid, have designated 9am-10am daily as senior shopping hours in an attempt to limit the pandemic exposure to at-risk seniors.
Some grocery stores may offer discounts for seniors during specific times of the day.
For example, Piggly-Wiggly grocery stores offer senior discounts on Wednesday, when seniors who are 60 or older can get 5 percent off their grocery bills.
So, check in with your local grocery stores to see what senior specials they offer. While some senior grocery store discounts are offered nationally, others are local. Also, keep in mind that you will most likely have to show proof of your age in order to qualify for these senior grocery discounts.
