How To File Your Taxes For Free

Filing your taxes can seem like a burden but at least the process does not have to cost you money. If you feel comfortable doing your taxes yourself it is easy to find free tax prep software online. In fact, the IRS has a Free File program that allows you to choose from a number of free tax softwares.

You can even find no-cost help with filing your taxes through a government initiative called VITA(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). Learn everything you need to know in the slides below.

Taxes: How The Free File Programs Work

If you make $73,000 or less per year, then you are among the 70% of Americans who qualify to file their taxes for free through the IRS’ Free File program. Tax accounting companies partner with the IRS to offer their tax software at no cost for Free File, which ends up helping millions of Americans file their taxes for free every year.

To do your taxes through Free File all you have to do is gather your tax materials and head over to the IRS Free File site.

If you make more than $73,000 you can use the IRS Free File Fillable Forms. Since there is no guided assistance for these forms, you will need to be confident in your ability to do your taxes with very little assistance if you have a high income but would still like to use Free File.

If you need extra help with filing your taxes and you make $60,000 or less per year, you may be able to find it through a government program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

VITA is made up of many volunteers who want to help their communities by providing free tax assistance to people who need it. The VITA initiative is made possible through IRS grants to non-profits who then assemble the volunteer tax preparers and manage the VITA sites where people can go to get tax help.
