You have probably heard of tax filing companies like Intuit’s TurboTax and H&R Block but did you know that these companies offer free tax filing software? Many tax software companies have several different versions of their tax programs and usually the most basic ones are free to use.
There are no minimum income requirements to use these types of free tax software but the programs are usually bare bones so you will not be able to use them if you have a complicated tax return. For instance, a freelancer or a landlord would probably not get by with one of these free softwares.
If your taxes are not complicated and you are comfortable with filling out the tax forms on your own then you can search for the following software companies to access the free editions of their tax filing programs.
H&R Block is an often used company. It offers basic tax filing software for free, and H&R Block also partners with United Way for MyFreeTaxes, a program that offers free tax assistance and filing to those who make less than $66,000 per year.
